CNC For Yourself
Sainsmart's Genmitsu Cubiko desktop CNC has soared past its Kickstarter goal, surpassing its modest $30,000 target by over $800,000.

We covered the entry-level CNC when its Kickstarter launched last month, with a keen interest in its promise to mill PCB far cleaner than the average CNC; specifically boasting a +/- 0.01 mm. This is, of course, in addition to other CNC functions like carving, laser engraving, or pen plotting.

$299 packages of the $500 MSRP enclosed CNC are still available, so be sure to check out our full coverage if you're interested.

A 3D printer for tattoos?

YouTube channel Emily the Engineer decided it was high time 3D printers took a step back to 2D printing with ink... just on human flesh. So, naturally, the channel set out to automate tattooing with (seemingly) willing guinea pig and fellow YouTuber Build Daniel Build, tattooing the word "LEG" on his thigh.

You might have seen some coverage of the Ender 7 conversion last week when it garnered lots of attention. We saw it. We love it. We hope you did, too. For the record, I would love one of these tattoos.

Printing's Eco Impact
The US still believes in sustainability!

America's national defense manufacturing research wing (the NCDMM) is putting $2.1 million into new research on the sustainability and environmental benefits of additive manufacturing. ASTM International, the standards organization, will developing ways to reuse and recycle 3D printing materials while helping manufacturers implement eco-friendly practices. ASTM leads a team that also includes Boeing, 3D printing service Addman, Amaero Advanced Materials & Manufacturing, and the Additive Manufacturing Green Trade Association.

Metal AF
DryAF looks like it could be the last spool you'll ever need.

The project says that it is compatible with MasterSpool refills, plus other popular brands' filament refills, and its 100% metal system fixes common issues with other reusable and plastic spools. Coming soon to Kickstarter, where you can sign up for updates.

Guitar Heroes
Ask the master of 3D printed electric guitars.

"I've made them in aluminum, I've made them in resin .. and even printed in wood with binder jetting," says Olaf Diegel, professor of additive manufacturing at the Univ. of Auckland and founder of ODD Guitars. He's 3D printed more than 100 spectacular electric guitars, so far. Check out how they're made and why in this 3-minute short from our friends over at 3DNatives.

Price Watch
Prices of Bambu Lab hardware have risen.

As expected, the Trump administration's 10% tariff on goods from China will affect some of the consumer prices of 3D printing. The first direct sign we’ve spotted is at Bambu Lab, which has increased hardware prices in its US webstore by approximately 3%, which we have confirmed is a result of the imposition.

Neat & Nested
Universal new fix for your part-nesting woes.

The Jan. 2025 update of Autodesk Fusion debuts a new way to nest your polymer powder bed fusion builds called True Shape 3D Nesting. Alexander Oster, Autodesk's director additive manufacturing, says that Fusion is now "the most compelling 3D nesting solution for polymer additive manufacturing ... and fully compatible with all mainstream SLS/MJF printers." True Shape is a voxel-based arrangement method for a higher packing density and part placements that considers the "no build zones" specific to particular 3D printers — ideal for companies with multiple polymer powder technologies.

Hadn't anyone thought of this before?

EIBOS 3D, the filament and filament dryer maker, just filed a US patent for its new dual-spool dryer, Polyphemus, that solves the problem of uneven spool drying. The new device sits spools on rollers and gently rotates them over the main heating unit — like perfectly roasting a marshmallow over a campfire — to avoid "spot deformation, melting, and other unwanted effects" when heat-drying filament, the company says.

3D printed designer shoes? It must be almost fashion week.

Like most things Gucci, I can't tell if these shoes are hideous or gorgeous. At least the 3D printing is fabulous! The Gucci Cub3d sneaker from the Spring Summer 2025 collection features a distinctive sole, created using the selective laser sintering (SLS) 3D printing technology. The 3D printed lattice structure was "inspired by the polyhedron," the company says. Gucci 3D Footwear Designer Matteo Burzio shared on LinkedIn that the shoe's Net pattern was designed using Rhino and Grasshopper CAD software. Hurry, there are only 20 pairs for sale.
