The updated filament changer will ship soon. And, if you already have an MMU3, the "upgrade" could cost less than $10.

Prusa Research has now launched its MMU3 for Core One, a version of the company’s filament changer made to easily install on the Prusa Core One enclosed 3D printer, after announcing the product was “imminent” earlier this month.

Three versions of the MMU are now available for pre-order: a “lite” upgrade path, an enclosed upgrade, and a full kit-and-caboodle enclosed MMU3.

The standard MMU3 for Core One goes for $409. Or, you can save a little by picking up the kit version for $369 – just $10 more than the MMU3 for the MK4S. Both net you an MMU3 with all the mounting gear you’ll need and a top cover with a sliding grill to maintain the Core One’s functionality as an enclosed system with little fuss.

But, you’ll have a bit to wait for these full systems. There’s a three-to-four-week lead time for the kits right now, and the assembled units are marked as out of stock.

If you already have an MMU3, it won’t even cost you $10 to adapt the system for the Core One. The “MMU3 lite” conversion kit is just a PTFE tube and fastener set, but no top cover, for $9. If you want to keep your system enclosed, the kit with a top cover will cost you just $40. Still pretty affordable, but it’s nice that Prusa is leaving its users open to creating their own enclosure solutions or just leaving the top off altogether for printing with low-temperature materials. (Although, if you’re doing that, the Original Prusa MK4S is still plenty great.)

You can get your hands on these upgrade kits a little sooner, as Prusa says there’s just a one-week lead time.

As with its previous iteration, the MMU3 for Core One sees spools in the open air and splayed off to the 3D printer’s side. It allows for larger spools, and makes room for the system’s filament buffer, but isn’t great for saving space. Fortunately, Prusa has also released the MMU3 Community Version: an interesting top-mounted “development version” of the MMU3 that the company decided not to sell, but is still releasing as a DIY upgrade. You can find the Community Version files on Printables, but will still need a longer cable that Prusa is selling for $19.

The Community Version seems to be something of a precursor to the “next-gen” MMU Prusa has teased, but has made clear will not continue the MMU’s upgrade path – or even naming convention.

The release came with an update to the Prusa Core One’s firmware that, among other things, enabled configurable PTFE tube length for the MMU3.
