Same Layers, Different Crunch
What Do KitKats and 3D Printed Tools Have in Common? Layers, of course.

Nestlé, the maker of KitKats, started 3D printing spare parts for the very machines that churn out its chocolate bars and other products across three factories in the UK. Partnering with Markforged, Nestlé’s York-based 3D printing workshop plans to print at least 5% of its factory inventory in-house. Nestlé says the initiative has led to substantial cost savings over traditional manufacturing.

Backer or Buyer? When Million-Dollar Companies Crowdfund, You Still Carry the Risk

Some 3D printer Kickstarter campaigns look like global product releases with finished, guaranteed products. I always assumed Kickstarter wouldn't be cool with this, but digging deeper I see it's an evolution to a new status quo. But shouldn't Kickstarter evolve with it?

Group Hug
A Tinkercad update has added a "bundle group" function.

Now, disorganized souls like myself can group objects together without resorting to union groups. The objects remain distinct and separate, but can be manipulated together. Tinkercad says the difference in processing time between a using bundle group and union group is significant – instant versus, depending on the group's complexity, minutes. Happy days.

Structures of Resilience
Wildfire resistance may spark a surge in interest for 3D printing homes.

Start-up 3D construction printing company VeroTouch just finished these two 3D printed, 1,100 sq. ft. homes with A1-rated concrete walls—the highest fire-safety standard in the U.S.—offering new resilience in wildfire-prone Colorado. One home’s structure was printed in just 16 days using COBOD’s BOD2 printer. VeroTouch now aims to scale up 3D printing to deliver faster, safer housing across the state.

Tooled Up
Bambu Lab announced the Vortek yesterday, and Prusa has clapped back.

We knew a "next gen" MMU of some kind was in development at Prusa Research, but could this be the very first glimpse of the shape it will take? Shortly after Bambu Lab announced its future vision for multicolor printing, Josef Prusa took to X in typically wry fashion, posting a popcorn emoji and this image of a toolchanging Prusa Core One with at least six tool slots.

Interesting times.

3D Printed Conservation
A tale of two reefs: Bespoke condos or a sunken car lot?

On one hand, Sydney's BioShelter using complex marine-biology-based data algorithms and 3D printed molds to create what are essentially custom condos for oysters. On the other hand, Miami's ReefLine is jump-starting its coral restoration by sinking 22 full-scale concrete cars made from 3D printed molds. Which will sea creatures prefer? We'll have to wait and see if they favor hydrodynamic perfection or the eternal charm of a '98 sedan.
