Power Down
Cut your printer energy consumption up to 72% with a few hacks.

Scientific research by two university engineers found that your FDM printer's heated bed contributes to 60% - 70% of its total energy consumption. So if you go "off profile" and lower that temp. to 11.49°C below the glass temperature of your filament, they found, while increasing the nozzle temp. significantly above the melting temp., you could dramatically lower energy use. Couple these tips with a fast print speed and a higher layer hight, and you can drop your energy use 48% - 72%.

Now We Know
Scientists can now tell your 3D printed parts exactly how much they can lift,

ending the awkwardness when they're spotted at the gym. The gyroid — my favorite triply periodic minimal surface structure — is far more than a cool-looking infill option. Thanks to new research from the Univ. of Maine, the strength of gyroid infills can now be accurately calculated with a reliable mathematical formula. Engineers now have a predictive tool, rather than relying on extensive physical prototyping.

Out With the Old
Flashforge is offering $100 off the AD5X or AD5M Pro when you trade-in an old 3D printer.

The promotion runs until August 31, and the company says it will cover all shipping costs.

The AD5X multicolor 3D printer was released just a couple of short months ago. At $399, it already competes with the A1 Mini combo; a further $100 off makes for a tempting offer. Besides, it's not difficult to scrounge up a dirt-cheap Ender 3 these days to trade.

Metal No More
Is this finally the end of Desktop Metal?

The U.S.-based maker of binder jetting and extrusion metal 3D printers (and more than a dozen of its affiliated companies) filed for bankruptcy yesterday, just months after new owners, Nano Dimension, were forced by a U.S. court to complete a takeover of the company. "The decision to file for bankruptcy protection was made by Desktop Metal’s independent Board of Directors, who conducted a process to explore available strategic alternatives," Nano Dimension said in a statement. Desktop Metal is looking at opportunities to sell its technology.

A Victory for 3D Printing
The real winner of the Tour de France? A $400 custom 3D printed saddle.

If you looked closely at Tadej Pogačar glide across the finish line of the Tour de France yesterday, you might have noticed his custom 3D printed Fisk Vento Argo 00 Adaptive saddle ($400), which was without a doubt the reason for his victory (just kidding). Pogačar was part of UAE Team Emirates‑XRG, which began using Fizik saddles in 2025, specifically using the One-to-One adaptive 3D printed technology from Carbon that is tailored to each rider’s body and riding position.
