A teaser posted to social media leaves little left unknown about BigTreeTech’s Klipper-compatible, filament drying, RFID-reading automatic filament changer.

Teased at Formnext last year and originally set to release early in 2025, BigTreeTech’s VVD, or “ViViD” looks set to finally release, with the full launch set for next week at the Formnext additive manufacturing trade fair in Frankfurt, Germany, according to a post the company put out on social media.

Available to preorder from November 17 for $299 and shipping in January 2026, this four-filament box joins the small but growing list of Klipper-friendly solutions, mostly community-made, for multicolor printing.

Unlike filament changers from printer manufacturers, which are brand locked with compatibility reserved for a limited set of machines, BigTreeTech’s VVD is a machine agnostic and Klipper compatible, working with “any Klipper based printer that you can build your own firmware for”. This presumably means not only self-built hardware, but 3D printers from manufacturers that use Klipper firmware like Sovol and Qidi.

The device promises to be “effortless” to set up, with tutorials for BigTreeTech’s Klipper AMS-addon available to help guide users through installation. Judging by the information available it’ll be possible to use the VVD on printers with printheads that do not have filament cutters, with configuration for filament tip-forming – basically the difference between losing some centimetres of filament at every change (using a cutter) and the trickier tuning required to have the printer prepare the filament ends at change for reliable reloading.

The typical traits of a complete filament feeder are present: it’s a sealable box that can vent moist air, with an in-box heater flowing air up to 60°C to dry filament. The VVD can also print while drying the filament.

It supports using a buffer to ensure the filament flows smoothly. The post also details that the VVD will auto-feed filament on insertion, and has RFID tag readers open to reading a number of protocols.

The BigTreeTech ViViD launches at Formnext, where exhibition attendees can get an 8% discount.
