Fillamentum’s circular NonOilen filament expands with new colors that Fillamentum says keep the material’s reusability intact.
Fillamentum’s NonOilen line of prints-like-PLA, fully biodegradable filament has expanded with five new colours. Until now, the material only came in a natural, pearlescent beige kind of colour.
Available now in Whispering Grass, Ginger Shot, Red Sunset, Arctic Blue, and Dark Stone colors, the materials benefit from bio-based pigments that don’t compromise the filament’s recyclability and “meet food safety standards,” says Fillamentum. The new colors are intended to retain the material’s novel features over regular PLA – no small feat, since any additive that changes a material’s characteristics or, here, its appearance, can tip those advertised properties out of balance.

All that considered color comes at a price, though. A 1 kg spool of the colored NonOilen costs $46, compared to $40 for an equivalent spool of regular NonOilen.
If you’re not familiar with NonOilen’s origin, it’s Fillamentum’s signature recyclable filament. Developed with prof. Ing. Pavol Alexy, PhD. from the Slovak Technical University in Bratislava, it prints like PLA, but can, Fillamentum says, be reused many times “without loss of properties.”
In the chemistry, NonOilen is a PLA/PHB blend. PHB is relatively novel in 3D printing, and is fully biodegradable. Unlike PLA, which is often marketed as a fully biodegradable and eco-friendly choice – the reality there is “it depends,” requiring industrial facilities to properly biodegrade – NonOilen breaks down faster in the same conditions, and can even be processed in an electric composter.
Printability-wise, NonOilen is a low-warp material and prints just like PLA, though Fillamentum does recommend drying at 75°C for five hours before use. One of its key characteristics is high temperature stability – you can heat printed parts up to 110 °C without deformation, even without annealing.
We’ve printed some samples with it late last year, and found it a cinch to work with. It definitely does need drying before use, otherwise you will contend with moisture bubbles, but this is handily dealt with if you have a filament dryer. Of particular value is that you can throw a NonOilen print in the dishwasher on a hot cycle and it’ll come out the other side with no loss in its shape – its temperature resistance stands quite clearly above that of regular PLA. The material itself is deemed food-safe, though the hygiene of how exactly you print it will have a bearing on whether the prints themselves are indeed food-safe.
The new NonOilen colors are available now from Fillamentum.
