Going to the beach? No need to worry about loose items with this sand safe! Slice, 3D print, and relax. Also, don't forget the sunscreen!
Are you headed to the beach and want to minimize as much as possible all the stuff you’ll have to carry? Or you’ve got a few precious things you don’t want to worry about while you’re taking a dip or going to buy a snack? (Hello, home keys!)
Maker AFO3D has created a great model that’s meant to keep your mind at ease, and we couldn’t help but feature it in our Thing of the Week as half the world’s going on a summer break.
And yes, you might take a look at the design and think, well, it can still be stolen… That’s where designing creativity and cunning come into play: The safe includes a spot for an Apple AirTag so that you can keep tabs on where it is.
We can’t wait for our holidays to try this very useful model.
Right off the bat, the maker recommends using ASA or ABS – probably due to their mechanical strength and heat resistance (hey, we all know that sand can get pretty hot). PETG is also proposed as the material for the sand shield; this might have to do with it having better UV resistance than ABS. To find the model split for the material change, check out the second print profile shared by the designer on MakerWorld.
Other than that, suggested print settings include tree supports, a 0.2-mm layer height, and six walls for the handle and cap. The designer also includes a detailed tutorial (images included) on how to add the 16-mm lock.
Other makers comment on some shortcomings – the handle not being particularly sturdy, the safe not being big enough for certain smartphones – but the designer has responded to all and is taking the feedback into consideration for the V3. And as some makers point out, yes, the safe can be potentially broken into, but the idea behind it is mostly about concealment, with the lock representing an additional challenge to overcome.
AFO3D has shared 20 models on Printables and 22 on MakerWorld, and his Sand Safe 2 won Printables’ 2024 Beach Necessities contest. If you’re more of a pool person and you’re looking for more summer fun, check out his sinking spools game!
In addition to following him on the different platforms, you can also go for a membership via Thangs or join their Printables club. How cool is that?
