Converting SLDPRT to STL can be hard if you don't have the right tools. Here's a handy list of tools you can use to convert your files. Choose the one that works for you!
SLDPRT is a file format used to save 3D part models in SolidWorks, a professional CAD platform designed by Dassault Systeme for mechanical engineers. Without SolidWorks, converting SLDPRT files is not an easy task. This is especially true given that SLDPRT files are not back compatible. In other words, even if you do have SolidWorks, you won’t be able to open files created in newer versions. Luckily, there is a way to overcome these limitations.
In most cases, STL files are used as a connection between 3D printing slicers (such as Slic3r or Cura) and 3D modeling or CAD software. Think of STL as something you can import in you slicer and 3D print. Most of the 3D models on the internet meant for 3D printing are in STL format, so if you end up with an SLDPRT file, you’ll need a way to convert it to an STL.
Being a SolidWorks-native file format, the most obvious way of converting SLDPRT to STL is with SolidWorks. It’s very easy and fast – you just have to open your SLDPRT file in SolidWorks, click on “Save as” in the “File” menu, choose “STL file format”, and save it.
But what if you don’t have SolidWorks installed? Don’t worry, you’re still in luck. Dassault Systeme made eDrawings, a free SolidWorks viewer, which you can get for free from their official download page. Once installed, you can use it for viewing various different CAD file formats. Every 3D file you open in eDrawings can be saved as an STL, including SLDPRT.
Saving STL files works the same way as in SolidWorks. Open the “File” menu, then save it as an STL.
In both SolidWorks and eDrawings, when the save dialog opens, you may notice an “Options” button. Click on this button to adjust the quality and size of your STL file.
These two options are the best for converting SLDPRT files to STL. But if you don’t want to install any software on your computer, you can always use an online converter…
There are a number of online converters that can convert from SLDPRT to STL, but we’ll just name a few.
CovertCADFiles is a paid online file converter. Here, you can convert from a number of file formats, including those native to SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor, Catia, SolidEdge, Rhino, and SketchUp. All input files can be converted to 3D PDF, STL, OBJ, or 3DS. In order to get your files converted, you have to buy a voucher, which starts at 10 euros. They charge 1 euro per conversion (but there are other payment options), and you have one free trial conversion.
CadMesh is another online converter. They support more than a hundred different input file formats. For output, you can choose between STL, DAE, and OBJ files for free. If you’re willing to pay $1 per file, you can get 3D PDF, STP, 3DS, and IGS.
Before you start converting, you should open a free account. Once your file is uploaded, choose a file format you need and click “Submit request”. You’ll get your file in the next 30 days, but if you want it faster, check the “one business day” check box.
GrabCAD isn’t just a file converter. It’s an online community of professional designers, engineers, manufacturers and students. Here, you can find free CAD models, tutorials, forums, and of course, their Workbench. GrabCAD Workbench is an online collaboration tool where you can share your files with your friends and team members. Additionally, it’s a very useful tool for converting files from most major CAD formats.
Before you start, you have to open an account (if you haven’t done that, yet) and log in. Follow these steps to convert your file:
