Mankind has always been fascinated with mortality and the meaning of life. Skulls help us learn about our past and understand how we may be progressing to the future. Skulls can be frightening, beautiful or even fanciful. They are also quite dramatic objects that demonstrate the incredible capabilities of 3D printers. What is it? This is a remix of a standard 3D skull design also from Thingiverse. It has a ‘Voronoi’ pattern applied to it, dividing the surface into ‘seeds’ around a specified set of ‘points’ giving it its distinctive pattern. A light was added inside the skull, making it an amazing decorative lamp that would be perfect for anyone’s Halloween party!

What is it? This is a hollow 3D skull that is decorated with Celtic patterns both on the surface and even inside the skeleton’s eye sockets. A light was added in the photo to give the model a Jack-o-Lantern feel.

The Anatomical Museum at the University of Edinburgh has started making a variety of highly detailed printable 3D scans of a variety of artifacts from their museum, including the skull of a ‘Homo neanderthalensis’ species that inhabited in Eurasia 400,000 – 40,000 years ago. This is a great option if you want to get your hands on ‘real’ anatomical items and artifacts right in your own home or classroom.
