The BigRep Studio is the latest professional large-scale 3D printer to come from the German manufacturer. Review the specs here!

When it comes to large-scale 3D printing technology, the German 3D printer manufacturer BigRep has become a pioneer in this growing field. Its original flagship 3D printer, the BigRep ONE 3D printer, has an iconically minimalist design and an enormous build volume, making it a show-stopper at every additive manufacturing trade show floor or event that it appears at.

But last year, BigRep decided to refine this mammoth machine, focusing less on size and more on reliability and user friendliness. The result of this professionally-minded pivot is the BigRep Studio, a large-format 3D printer that is admittedly smaller than the ONE, but also more affordable, compact and capable.

When we visited the company last year, the BigRep Studio was just a prototype and the team was still working all of the kinks out. Nonetheless, at the time, BigRep’s 3D printing specialist Michel David was still confident that their upcoming 3D printer release would usher in a new era for the company.

“It is smaller in size but it is also smaller in price, and it will retail for roughly half the price which makes it very cost effective for the size and performance. After a few years of development, this is our next product. We all hope it will be a promising product; kind of like the BigRep One but a better version of it; a more robust and industrial-oriented machine,” he told All3DP.

Fast-forward to today…The BigRep Studio is now out and available to customers across the globe. This professional large-scale 3D printer is an ideal option for small businesses that need a sizable, yet compact, 3D printer in their office environment. No matter the difference in size compared to the BigRep ONE, the Studio is undoubtedly a substantial addition to the BigRep product line and professional 3D printing market as a whole.

So, let’s take a closer look at the features and specs that make the BigRep Studio such an intriguing option for professionals and small businesses.

The latest printer to join BigRep’s product line is the BigRep Studio, a industrial-grade machine that is half the size of the BigRep ONE. Although a print volume of 500 x 1000 x 500mm is nothing to scoff at, the question still remains, why did BigRep decide to go smaller when the company is best known for its gargantuan printing capabilities?

Well, for starters, the manufacturer wanted to focus more on speed and accuracy this time around. The compact size of the printer also plays a critical role in the design, making it much easier to setup and satisfy the specific needs of their customers. The BigRep Studio is much less costly than the BigRep ONE (priced at around ~50,000 Euro), retailing somewhere in the range of 31,900 Euro.

While the price and size on the newest machine may be reduced, the 3D printing capabilities are most certainly not. The Studio comes equipped with a 0.6 nozzle, which is optimized for both speed and precision, and can also print with flexible materials. This printer has a layer resolution of 100-400 microns, and offers dual extrusion printing from the all-metal hot-end.

Other advantages include a more intuitive and user-friendly interface, an enclosed printing chamber, and the ability to print more high-temperature materials. The BigRep Studio has a print speed of up to 140 mm/s and a layer height of 0.1mm.  Unique features like the ability to resume prints after power failure and remote monitoring via webcam adds to the user-friendliness of the printer’s overall makeup.

By reducing the size and increasing the speed and precision, the company is hitting a sweet spot that the BigRep ONE just so happened to miss the mark with. According to BigRep, the print volume is still suited for about 80 percent of the prints commonly done on the BigRep ONE.

The manufacturer believes that the compact design and enclosed build chamber makes the Studio better suited for the office environment than its predecessor.
