Things slip through our 3D printery dragnet from time to time, like the BigTreeTech Pi 2 AI bundle, a product team-up by BigTreeTech and Obico.

The heart of the BigTreeTech Pi 2 AI bundle is BTT’s Pi 2 single-board computer, which serves as a Raspberry Pi alternative for Klipper firmware-based 3D printers. The AI bundle, though, goes beyond the SBC hardware to provide users with some useful monitoring smarts.

Purpose built for 3D printing, the BTT Pi 2 features extensive connectivity, including multiple USB ports, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and interfaces for cameras and touchscreens, all while running directly from a printer’s 12V or 24V power supply. It uses a Rockchip RK3566 processor, 2GB of RAM, and 32GB of onboard eMMC storage. In terms of raw power, which may not necessarily matter in its intended usage case, it sits somewhere between the Raspberry Pi 3+ and 4, with a form factor that’s slightly longer than the Raspberry Pi 4.

What makes this a “smart” offering is the inclusion of three months’ unlimited usage of Obico and its AI-powered software, which is typically charged via monthly subscription with a capped number of AI-powered monitoring hours, or via prepaid “packs” of hours. In addition to networking and remote monitoring and management, Obico’s thing is webcam print quality monitoring – they are the people behind The Spaghetti Detective.

By connecting a webcam to the printer, you gain access to failure detection that can spot issues like spaghetti and detached prints. The system can then pause the print and alert you about it, saving time and filament.

The Pi 2 SBC alone will set you back $49.99 via the BigTreeTech webstore. But for nominally more at $51.99, you can get the board and three months of Obico usage – potentially, 2,000+ hours of printing under a watchful AI eye.
