The upgrade path offers a marginal resolution increase for $290 – about double the cost of a 14K LCD replacement. But we'll have to wait for the stock 16K machine.

Phrozen has released its first 16K offering, but it’s not a new resin 3D printer: it’s an upgrade.

The Phrozen 16K Upgrade Kit is a new, higher-resolution LCD upgrade for Phrozen’s 14K Sonic Mighty Revo 3D printer for $290. It’s a simple kit, including a new screen, mainboard, ADA film, and other requisite bits. It looks pretty straightforward to install, being just a mainboard and screen swap.

We’re well past the point of diminishing returns for these kinds of numbers on a 10.1″ screen, and Phrozen seems to know that themselves. In an unboxing and installation livestream recording by Craig Killmar, a social media specialist with the company, he spoke a little about the kit and compares 16K, 14K, and 8K prints under a microscope. The difference is visible at magnification, but clearly small. While Killmar points out that 16K is smoother, he does admit it’s difficult to see the difference without magnification, and offers an opinion that finely detailed miniatures don’t benefit much from the increase.

But, Killmar also makes the point that, if you’re going to change your LCD screen anyway, an extra $135 will help squeeze some extra pixels from your printer juice. It’s about double the price of the 14K replacement, but if you’re keen on the bleeding edge or do fine-detail work like jewelry casting, it may be worth considering.

Strangely, a “Revo 16K” isn’t part of this release. A stock 16K 3D printer is coming, Killmar says, but there’s no indication of when.

Offering upgrade paths for existing 3D printers isn’t nearly as common in the resin space as it is for FDM machines, but it makes perfect sense. When the new version constitutes swapping out an LCD screen and a few other bits, why render the rest of your hardware e-waste? Better yet, you can skip coughing up another $850 or more for a marginal resolution increase.

This isn’t Phrozen’s first time offering an upgrade to existing machines, either. The company previously released an 8K to 12K upgrade for its Mighty lineup, and we’re pleased to see the practice continue.
