Polymaker has just introduced Fiberon PA612-ESD, a new engineering filament for hobbyists and professionals tailormade for static-safe components and eliminating the need for post-processing or specialized ESD coatings.
Reinforced with 10% carbon fiber nano-tubes, Fiberon PA612-ESD, according to Polymaker, boasts impressive mechanical properties. The manufacturer cites a high stiffness and a tensile strength of 84 MPa, which they claim ensures both strength and dimensional stability in printed parts. The key feature is what Polymaker describes as reliable electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection, specifying a surface resistivity of 10⁴–10⁷ Ω/sq. Held against the ANSI/ESD S541 standard for electrostatic discharge puts the filament squarely in the static dissipative area.
For those working with PCBs or other delicate circuitry and electronic components, a sudden electrostatic discharge can permanently damage or destroy them. An ESD-safe enclosure helps prevent this by safely dissipating static charges away from the valuable electronics within. Polymaker also states the material is engineered for high-temperature environments, claiming a heat deflection temperature of up to 157 °C. To better explain the material’s ins-and-outs and the why-you-should-care-about-ESD, the company cut together an impressive YouTube video, embedded below.
The company highlights the material’s purported ease of use, claiming it exhibits low warping and can be printed at speeds up to 300 mm/s. According to Polymaker, the filament is compatible with AMS systems and comes vacuum-sealed to prevent moisture absorption, ensuring a smoother printing experience for professionals.
You’ll need a tough, abrasion-resistant nozzle to reliably print PA612-ESD, and an all-metal hot end capable of 280 °C+. Annealing the prints is recommended.
A 500g spool of Polymaker Fiberon PA612-ESD will set you back $64.99 from the Polymaker webstore. If you have a filament dryer big enough, there’s a 3 kg spool, too, for $299.99.
