Two years and a whole alternate system later, Elegoo’s indeterminately delayed Canvas for the original Centauri Carbon printer is almost ready.

I don’t think anyone at Elegoo would admit that multicolor printing on the original Centauri Carbon had gone to plan. Communicated as a coming-soon feature, then quietly removed and ultimately delayed beyond the release of the Centauri Carbon 2, which is multicolor – it’s fair to say some folks thought it was never going to happen. Yet happen, it has. Or rather, will. Elegoo is delivering on its promise of a Canvas filament switching system for the original Centauri Carbon, launching soon, and we’ve seen it.

We got a first-hand look at the system in action at Rapid + TCT in Boston, where the upgrade got its debut alongside another new release in the Centauri 2 Combo, which is a pared back version of the Centauri Carbon 2.

The Canvas for Centauri Carbon is the full-fat Elegoo multicolor printing experience, too, maintaining the same performance and capability of the CC2’s Canvas, including RFID tag reading.

When asked what caused the hold up, a representative told us that there were crucial differences between the body and power requirements of the original and the Centauri Carbon 2, which is currently Canvas-by-default (you can’t buy it without the Canvas.)

The Canvas for Centauri Carbon upgrade mimics the Centauri Carbon 2 Combo, with the Canvas mounted on top, and the spools sitting to the side of the printer (Source: All3DP)

One consequence of this solution is that there’s a mandatory swap of printhead components required to upgrade the printer. When you buy the Canvas for Centauri Carbon, it won’t simply be a case of attaching the Canvas unit to the side and adding more spool holders.

That’s all Elegoo was willing to share with us for now, but we won’t have to wait long for more – the Canvas for Centauri Carbon is expected to release by the months’ end. Pricing is not yet locked in.
