News of the Centauri Carbon’s possible multicolor dead-end comes just ahead of Centauri Carbon 2 which can print multicolor out of the box.
In the beginning Elegoo was never too firm on its commitment to multicolor printing for the Centauri Carbon, telling us at its reveal that it wasn’t a priority and nothing they’d rush. If anything, the capability would follow in a second generation machine. Later, the company opened up to say that, yes, it was working on something for the Centauri Carbon, but testing was ongoing and not quite up to expectation. Despite the initial reservations, it publicly aimed for a Q3 release. Which is now. And there’s no automatic filament switching system in sight.
And there might never be, following a post today on Elegoo’s website updating Centauri Carbon users to the fate of the project. Best case, it’s delayed with no estimation of a release given. At worst, it’ll never happen.
The post states: “Due to some limitation of the hardware, so far the developing multicolor system has not yet delivered a performance that meets our expectation” and therefore, “we cannot guarantee a release date for the multicolor system so far.”
I’m not sure if many folks were waiting with bated breath for a multicolor system, but the promise of a future upgrade did sit on Centauri Carbon product pages and material for some time, a fact that may explain why Elegoo is offering compensation for those who can prove they bought one.
Elegoo concern for disappointed Centauri Carbon owners means that between now and January 31, 2026, Centauri Carbon owners can submit their information here to and claim one of the following:
Indeed, there’s a Centauri Carbon 2. Set to launch at the Formnext additive manufacturing show in Frankfurt, Germany, next week, Elegoo’s successor to the Centauri Carbon is already just around the corner and, possibly to the annoyance of those who just bought the Centauri Carbon, it comes packing multicolor capability.
Strapped to the side of the printer’s body is Elegoo’s new “CANVAS” automatic feeder system. Specifics of the printer are thin right this moment, although plenty of snapshots of it have appeared on social media, pulling from inadvertent early store postings and other sources.
Taking these “leaks” at face value, the Centauri Carbon 2 appears to take four-filaments, uses RFID filament identification – though whether it’s the new open standard Elegoo claimed to be working on, we shall see – and has automatic chamber venting for chamber temperature control. We’ll follow up next week with the full details as we get them.
