The colorful filament manufacturer’s new design tool is an easy way to bypass a boring afternoon by doodling something you can print. And there are prizes up for grabs in a celebratory launch competition.

I am a bit of a sucker for browser-based apps and tools and gizmos of the kind that let you absent-mindedly create. And that’s exactly what the newest feature of Cookiecad’s CADit design tool offers.

Called “Doodle Mode,” the new drawing feature lets you hand draw 3D layers in 2D, stacking as you go. You’re given fine control over the height of the layers, letting you build up 3D models slice by slice. And since it’s in your browser, you can mess around with it on your phone, tablet, or potato of a computer. No high-powered hardware is necessary. To access it, create a new project in CADit, and click on the colorful “Doodle Mode” button.

To celebrate the launch of Doodle Mode, Cookiecad is running a design competition inviting you to upload your best “doodle” in exchange for the change to win one of three prizes. The top billed prize bags a $250 coupon for use in Cookiecad’s web store, while second place gets three spools of “Premium” filament and the third spot takes a single spool of their choice.

You won’t be able to draw a crude Benchy or anything that results in overhangs, unfortunately – it seems the tool is set to continuously reshuffle the layers to sort the largest area to the bottom, rather than stacking relative to the previous layer.

It suffices to say I will not be entering the terribly professional looking All3DP logo above. Considering I used my laptop’s trackpad, it’s not so bad, is it? It is? Oh.

You have until February 21, 2026 to enter. Full rules can be found on the Cookiecad contest webpage.
