Machines in the wild and the beginnings of a file repository mark good news for Coast Runner, despite the recent filing of a lawsuit in California that threatens injunctive relief.

Coast Runner, the embattled startup that debuted its CR-1 desktop metal CNC milling last year, has begun shipping its first units to “pre-alpha” users.

The CR-1 was subject to two failed crowdfunding campaigns, both of which were shuttered by IndieGoGo and Kickstarter, respectively, after both determined that the company and product violated terms regarding prohibited items and misrepresentation.

Coinciding with the news of CR-1s out the door is the launch of the company’s CoastCAD file repository, a website that aims to fill a Thingiverse-shaped hole in the CNC machining space with ready-to-run project files.

It’s not all good news for Coast Runner, though. A lawsuit (PDF) pitting the state of California versus Coast Runner Industries, Inc., Ghost Gunner, Inc., and Defence Distributed was filed recently. It alleges the timing and nature of the operation make it a deliberate ploy to circumvent a new state law prohibiting the sale or transfer of CNC machines that have the explicit purpose of producing firearm components.

The parties involved have a lot of experience challenging such suits on constitutional grounds, so we suspect this will not be resolved quickly.

This was a bulletin - our usual news, but a little more compact.
