Autodesk's new AI-powered Neural CAD could change 3D design by moving beyond traditional parametric systems to create models from simple prompts.
A new category of generative AI models designed to fundamentally change how designers and engineers work is coming to Autodesk products.
Announced at the company’s AU 2025 conference, the technology, dubbed “Neural CAD,” is an entirely new approach to generating objects through computer-aided design (CAD). Users will be able to generate models from text prompts and the AI will hold the ability to reason not just at the geometric level, but also at an industrial process level too.
The design world has relied on parametric CAD systems for several decades now, which require meticulous, step-by-step instructions to create detailed models. According to Autodesk, Neural CAD offers a powerful alternative, allowing users to move seamlessly from early-stage, rough concepts to complex designs. The models have been trained to “reason” about CAD geometry and industrial systems, rather than simply pairing large language models with existing software.
The new technology is set to be integrated into several of Autodesk’s flagship products including Fusion, where designers will be able to create 3D models from simple text prompts. Meanwhile, the architecture and construction industries will get a specialized model within Forma that could enable a rapid transition from initial building concepts to detailed layouts and systems.
There has not been a specific date provided yet for when the roll out will commence, but Autodesk says users “can expect it soon and rapid improvement will follow.”
Autodesk’s research into this new AI category began with the establishment of its AI Lab in 2018. The aim was to create a unique form of AI that could directly understand and manipulate physical designs and systems. Unlike the more generalized large language models that power tools like ChatGPT, Neural CAD is trained on vast amounts of specific design, systems, and process data.
The company’s vision is for Neural CAD to make the creative process more intuitive and collaborative. The models will also be made available for organizations to customize with their own proprietary data, potentially giving them a competitive edge by tailoring the AI to their unique workflows and knowledge.
Autodesk’s announcement signals a significant step in the evolution of design technology — its integration with AI — and suggests a future where the initial, free-form stages of creative expression are no longer disconnected from the detailed work required for production.
