Not only is PEEK a difficult material to print, it’s also quite expensive. Italian manufacturer WASP wants to change that by printing with PEEK pellets that cost just a tenth of the price.

Italian 3D printer manufacturer WASP will debut its DeltaWASP 2040 TECH at Formnext 2019. It is capable of printing objects in medical-grade PEEK from pellets. This novel technology is a result of a cooperation with neurosurgeon Dr. Villiam Dallolio, who advises WASP in 3D printing materials for medical use.

The ability to print PEEK from pellets allows for implantable prostheses to be created at an affordable price. Pellets are considered to be up to ten times cheaper than filament materials. The printer boasts a precision Pellet HD extruder and an insulated high-temperature chamber made from stainless steel.

PEEK is an excellent, but costly material for medical uses because of its strength-to-weight ratio. PEEK prostheses are strong and light and resistant to high temperatures. Post-print, this material can be treated in an oven to improve its performance further.

The Delta WASP 2040 TECH will be one of three new printers unveiled by WASP at this year’s Formnext exhibition.

  • The Delta WASP 3MT CONCRETE is a new machine with a system that facilitates 3D printing of large fluid dense material with a continuous feeding method (see image below)
  • The final product being introduced is the Delta WASP 3MT INDUSTRIAL 4.0. Along with a continuous feeding mechanism this 3D printer has an optimized extruder for the printing of recycled pellet polymers.
