The New OMTech Polar Could Be a Glowforge Killer in the Making

Users traversing the internet’s desktop laser cutter content are almost certain to trip over the name Glowforge early on in their journeys. Glowforge has positioned itself well in the market thanks to some glitzy advertising, despite the bizarre premise that it’s a “3D laser printer”, which of course, it isn’t.

Rivals are looking to play catch up with Glowforge though, and as 2022 wound to a close, OMTech launched the Polar, a machine that, when squinting, you’d be hard pressed to tell the difference between it and a Glowforge.

The currently pre-orderable OMTech Polar looks to offer many of the same benefits that the Glowforge Pro does, but without some of Glowforge’s rather significant drawbacks. As a 50 W auto-focusing CO2 laser engraver, the Polar has the potential for slightly higher power than the Glowforge Pro, and it runs on LightBurn too; a solid yet significantly cheaper option than Glowforge’s software, which only really comes alive under a $50-per-month subscription for the Premium package.

With Glowforge’s machines requiring a constant internet connection to function and that hefty subscription fee, the Polar already looks appealing. But, it gets better. Currently on pre-sale for a cent under $2,900, the Polar undercuts the Glowforge Pro’s $6,995 base price. We think we can all agree that’s a huge sum of money saved.

It isn’t the only machine with Glowforge in its sights either, with Gweike’s Cloud also looking like a very strong alternative to the far more expensive Glowforge. It’s early days of course, but it looks like 2023 could be a much more challenging year for Glowforge’s sales department.
