The company revealed its "self-replicating" 3D printer on YouTube, but hasn’t decided whether it will sell kits for the build.

Last week on Rat Rig’s YouTube series, “Rat Rig TV”, the maker-machine designer and manufacturer teased an “almost exclusively” 3D printed 3D printer, the V-Chonk. The “internal project” with a name that could change (we hope not) will be released as an open-source build soon, but the company is also considering selling kits for those who want to undertake the project.

The V-Chonk is a CoreXY 3D printer with a cubic build volume of 180 mm, Rat Rig says, and to build it you’ll need a 3D printer with a build area of at least 400 x 400 mm. The company says that it’s considering selling mechanical kits with configurable electronics: 165€ without electronics, 365€ with budget electronics, or 450€ with premium electronics.

Rat Rig shared further details in an email with All3DP, including an unreleased draft of the V-Chonk BOM. It clarified that the only non-3D printed components in the build would be the “transmission components, electronics, fasteners, and four vertical beams on the frame.”

Though the company said it’s “on the fence” about selling V-Chonk kits in its reveal, it also told All3DP that a survey connected to a giveaway of the printer has received over 1,000 responses in five days that “have been positive in general.” Things are looking good for this chonker.
