Raspberry Pi Launches Raspberry Pi 5 with 16 GB RAM

Raspberry Pi has launched a Raspberry Pi 5 variant with 16 GB of RAM, doubling the device’s previous maximum memory and opening the door to several new – and more demanding – high-tech use cases.

The unit is priced at $120 and leverages a Micron-provided chip package that combines eight 16Gbit LPDDR4X die into one. It should perform well at tasks like “large language models and computational fluid dynamics”, Raspberry Pi says.

While the 8 GB version of the RPi5 should technically be able to handle such processes – especially in comparison to the Raspberry Pi 4, from which the 5 sees “a threefold step up in performance” – a memory boost should allow them to run more smoothly.

The release of the 16 GB Raspberry Pi 5 means users can now choose between four versions, including 4 GB, 8 GB, and the recently released 2GB for smaller-scale applications. Despite their differences in memory, the devices offer the same functionality and features, like a quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor and compatibility with M.2 SSDs.
