Raspberry Pi Launches 2 GB Raspberry Pi 5
The device differs from the 4 GB and 8 GB versions only in memory, retaining all functionality and arriving with a $50 price tag.
Raspberry Pi has launched a 2 GB version of the Raspberry Pi 5, positioning the device as a budget-friendly alternative to the 4 GB and 8 GB variants.
The new model costs $50, and is “built on a cost-optimized D0 stepping of the BCM2712 application processor”. It’s a redesign that has removed unnecessary features from the processor that were physically present yet disabled on Raspberry Pi devices – and which ultimately added to final costs.
In removing these features (dubbed “dark silicon”) and lowering the device’s memory, Raspberry Pi is able to reduce those costs, then pass the savings on to the end user.
Despite its lower price, the 2 GB Raspberry Pi 5 has the same functionality as the 4 GB and 8 GB versions. While “demanding users” may still want to opt for a larger device, Raspberry Pi says that the 2 GB version will be suitable for “many of you”.
