The Qidi Q2 launches in a couple of days, with its sights seemingly set on the beginner-friendliness of Bambu Lab’s machines.

Qidi Tech’s (now just Qidi, it appears) latest foray into desktop CoreXY 3D printing is slowly coming online, with a webstore placeholder for a printer called the Qidi Q2 ticking the clock down to an August 20 launch, and a string of teasers on social media drawing attention to what the company is positioning as “the one” (our words) for everyone.

As far as teasers go, its pretty insightful. Headline features include native compatibility with the Qidi Box filament changer, which is itself currently in pre-sale only for the company’s Plus4 3D printer and, judging by the online chatter around it.

That alone should give up to four-color printing, plus NFC-powered automatic filament recognition (for Qidi filaments) and active filament drying while printing. Beyond this, the Q2 printer itself features Qidi’s “second gen” chamber heating, capable of heating the printing environment up to 65°C.

The inclusion of an “intelligent AI camera” and substantial-sounding 3-in-1 air filter (combining G3 Pre-Filter, with a H12 HEPA and Coconut Shell Activated Carbon) tick the majority of boxes for a competitive fully enclosed desktop printer by 2025’s standards.

One notable change with the Q2 is the switch to a hot-end mounted loadcell for bed leveling measurements. This stands in contrast to previous machines like the Plus4, which used sensors in the bed to detect the taps from the nozzle. The company shows this particular difference off with a video showing the Q2 printing decent-looking first layers and fully adhered prints on all manner of print bed surfaces, from sheets of wood to t-shirts and marble.

I don’t think many folks will be loading slabs of marble into their machines that often, but point taken, Qidi. Bed leveling is bed agnostic now.

Judging by the specs listed, we can expect a 270 x 270 x 256 mm build volume, and for the printhead (with bimetallic nozzle) to scoot up to a 600 mm/s top potential speed, with up to 20,000 mm/s acceleration to get it there.

It’s typical of Qidi’s more recent hardware for the temps to top out higher than most and the Q2 is no exception, with the hot end reaching 370°C and the heated bed at 120°C. The motion system is CoreXY, with a linear rail supporting the X-axis and dual motor-driven leadscrews for the Z-axis.

If your interest is piqued, Qidi is offering unspecific perks for “early birds” who sign up for updates on the store page. We’ll be watching the launch page for more information as it arrives. But in the meantime, what do you think? Is it a winner, or the dog’s dinner?
