The new HP DesignScan brings established Creaform technology to HP's product lineup, reflecting a strategic move to expand its role in the digital manufacturing ecosystems.

HP has entered into a licensing agreement with Canadian 3D scanning company Creaform to introduce the HP DesignScan 3D scanner in two versions.

Creaform launched a new website, HPdesignscan.com, to market the scanner, which appears to be its Peel 3 machine with an HP logo on it, and minus the distinctive yellow accents.

Creaform launched its subsidiary Peel 3D in 2017 to develop a more accessible 3D scanner line leveraging Creaform’s core technology seen in its more industrial, and feature-rich scanners including the HandyScan Silver series.

HP logo or not, the Peel 3/HP DesignScan is among our top picks for professional 3D scanning. It’s a high-resolution device (up to 0.050 mm accuracy) with good speed (80 sec/m2) that focuses on improving usability through an ergonomic design, intuitive touchscreen capability, and novel haptic feedback. This feature provides several recognizable vibration patterns to guide you as you scan narrow and hard-to-reach places without a direct line-of-sight.

The scanner is offered as a bundle with HP 3D Scan.OS software we assume is Peel.OS, which is definitely one of the more user-friendly scanner software tools on the market. The software provides options to customize your scan settings before scanning your object, including the size of your object, the quality of your scan, output mesh format, and color information to be captured.

The second version of HP DesignScan from Creaform is the scanner bundled with HP Scan-to-CAD software. The software acts as a link, extracting all the information you need to export it for further post-processing in your preferred CAD software,  like Solidworks, Fusion, or Solid Edge. We assume this is the Peel.CAD Pro scan-to-CAD software offered on the Peel 3.

Other than the HP branding, the information from Creaform doesn’t point to anything differentiating the HP DesignScan from the Peel 3.

As 3D scanners become an indispensable component of the 3D printing workflow in a growing number of industries, it’s smart for HP to extend its role in the digital manufacturing pipeline without developing scanning tech from scratch. It had a growing number of 3D scanning companies to partner with, and Creaform is a wise choice if the goal is to offer an adaptable and flexible 3D scanning solution suitable for professionals new to scanning while offering the detail and power required for engineering applications.

There’s no price on the HP DesignScan website but the Peel 3 retails for around $8,500, while Peel 3.CAD and its reverse engineering capabilities start at $12,000.
