‘Blood of My Enemies’ Red’ Is a Real Filament Name, but They Get Weirder

In a world with an ever-growing roster of filaments, it's not easy for them to stand out. One way to do it? Adding a splash of dramatic or witty flair with a goofy, eye-catching name.

In case you’re wondering how scientific this editorial piece is, the answer is, not very. How am I an appropriate writer for it? Well, I’ve 3D printed quite a few models in the All3DP office, and being the basic person that I am, I am easily dazzled by witty names.

Because 3D printing makes All3DP what it is, we’ve extruded our way through hundreds of filaments. But how am I supposed to pick from five different black PLAs? Yes, sometimes I might choose the one that means I don’t have to climb the ladder to get it (I’m not the tallest person in the office and watching Final Destination as a tween left some emotional scars). Another reason why I might choose one option over another? A color name that puzzles me or makes me laugh.

So, if you’re a filament manufacturer and you named your black PLA, “Pearl Jam Black” – you got me. I will have been inclined to use this material, just because I like the song.

But enough about me. Indulge this obviously-a-Friday-afternoon-kind-of-thing article as I dive into some of the quirky and funny names out there in the fila-verse. My search only dove as deep as five brands and their creative names – I’m certain there are more so sound off in the comments with your personal faves.

Was the dog purple before it ate the color? (Source: Printed Solid)

“Jessie, are you okay?” was something I wondered as I looked at some of the names of Printed Solid’s Jessie PLAs. “Deep Purple” gets a bonus point because I immediately thought about “Smoke on the Water” (who didn’t?), while the “Ice” variations – blue, green, purple, red – refer to the transparent versions of the colors. Fair enough.

But then there’s “Purple Eater” and… hmm? And “Soul Black Glitter” made my teenage angst feel seen, and I do appreciate that it has glitter for a dazzling take. The one that takes the cake, though? “Brad’s Orange Glitter“. I’m puzzled. Who is Brad? Why does he have orange glitter? And a deep dive on the material led to me learning that Printed Solid donates $1 to the Make-A-Wish foundation for every spool of this color that’s sold, so now I want to get some?

You can’t tell me that you can read Fillamentum’s “Witch Please!” in any voice other than Samuel L. Jackson’s. No? That’s just me? Oh, well. It’s not the only one of theirs that’s given me food for thought. I’m not entirely sure what color “Vertigo Starlight” actually is (it sparkles), but at the very least I’m very curious about trying it. “Vertigo Mystique”, “Vertigo Cherry”, “Vertigo Jade”, and “Vertigo Galaxy” aren’t far behind. Also, how does Rapunzel come into play for “Rapunzel Silver“? Her hair was yellow… or is it silver from the tower where she was locked up all those years? Or is it a metaphor for her hair becoming silver after so many years locked up? Am I falling into an existential crisis overthinking this? What are you doing to me, Fillamentum?

I do appreciate “Everybody’s Magenta” although I’m not entirely sure if it means that everybody *is* magenta or the magenta belongs to everybody, and you know what, I’m not bothered by this, I’ll accept either answer. (Also, did we have a lengthy discussion in our office about the grammatical minefield that is Harry Style’s “Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally.” album title? Yes.)

Life tip: Don’t scroll through Fillamentum’s listing if you’re hungry. “Kiwi Green“, “Tangerine Orange”, “Orange Orange”, “Chocolate Brown”, “Melon Yellow”…

That’s some bloody good filament… (Source: Protopasta)

Protopasta’s filaments are featured for two reasons: First, there’s the fantasy angle. From “Unicorn Tears White Glitter” (I’m sad) to “Cupid’s Crush Metallic Pink” (ooh la la), plus “Stardust Silver Glitter” (now I’m thinking about the movie), and “Mermaid’s Tale Metallic Teal” (I want to go for a swim) – these materials all make me want to read a fantasy story. (And there’s “Empire Strikes Black“, which, *chef’s kiss*.)

Another reason? The filaments named after/with people, like “Joel’s Highfive Blue” – created with Joel Telling, 3D Printing Nerd; “Tom’s Tangerine Orange Metallic Gold” – made with Thomas Sanladerer; plus “Luke’s Proton Purple“, created with Luke Goodman, from Out of Darts. A personal favorite? “Amie’s ‘Blood of My Enemies’ Translucent Red“. I want to know who hurt Amie, I want to know if she’s okay now, and I’m wondering if everyone’s safe.

Paramount-3D, you had me at “Medusa Stone Gray“. “Hannibal Red” reminded me of Sir Anthony Hopkins’ cooking skills (in the movies) and now I’m not hungry anymore. “Decepticon Purple” made me want to listen to Steve Jablonsky’s score while writing this, while “British Racing Green” made me wonder about the number of varieties of racing greens if the British get their own? (If, like me, you know nothing about racing, it is, indeed, a thing.) And I’m sensing a racing theme, what with “Enzo Red” and “McLaren Orange“.

Plus, “Mid Century Teal” makes me want to compare it to contemporary teal, although I couldn’t find the latter. And last but not least, “Great Depression Jadeite“? I have questions, Paramount-3D. Thankfully, Redditor Sabz5150 coming to the rescue and I’ve learned something new.

“Bug Eyes” looks good on these dragons (Source: Atomic Filament)

From a catalog of mostly “straightforward” filaments, Push Plastic’s “Flat Dark Earth“, “Fatigue Green“, and “PWalt Yellow” puzzle me, while Atomic Filament’s “Chameleon Coastline“, “Too Good to be Blue” (I like puns), and “Bug Eyes” PLAs (from the shade-shifting series), definitely caught my eye. Prusament’s PLA blends “Oh My Gold” and “Viva La Bronze” also stand out in the sea of galaxy and more literal names, while the “Mystic Brown” and “Mystic Green” shades sparked my curiosity, being mysterious and all that.

Did any of the names above tickle you? Or do you know a better, funnier, weirder filament name? Sound off in the comments!
