Ember Prototypes has announced its Camera-Assisted XY Calibration Tool (CXC): a small device that “easily performs XY offset calibration on dual extruder and IDEX 3D printers, without the need for printing line patterns.”

When using a dual-extrusion 3D printer, the X and Y offset refers to the distance between the two nozzles. If not properly calibrated, gaps or overlapping may appear in prints. Calibration is typically done manually by fine-tuning settings and printing test grids or line patterns.

The CXC, however, uses a camera to perform XY offset calibration. This skirts the need for test patterns, removes some potential for human error, and promises to cut calibration times to less than five minutes – a major bonus for those seeking improved efficiency and print times.

Installation and setup appear to be relatively simple, as seen in a step-by-step instructional video released by Ember Prototypes. All you’ll need is a Windows-capable computer, the ability to move your 3D printer’s gantry in steps of 0.1 mm or less, and the ability to manually clear and override XY calibration values.

Pre-orders for the CXC go live on January 30, but those that join the waitlist will receive a 20% discount upon its March 2023 launch. For more information, visit the CXC product page on Ember Prototypes’ website.
