You Can Make Your Own Lightbox With Bambu Lab’s New Tool

Available as of last week in Bambu Lab’s MakerLab model creation toolkit, the Lightbox Maker does the heavy lifting in preparing a 2D image of your choosing (better a logo, graphic, text, or cartoon) for color lithophane-esque printing, with an accompanying light-blocking box frame to house the LEDs and battery.

The tool comes hot on the heels of the Flexi Toy Maker and Relief Sculpture Maker, bringing MakerWorld’s total number of quick modeling tools to twelve, not counting the four “experimental” tools that Bambu Lab aptly describes as “inelegant prototypes”.

Throw a JPG, PNG, SVG, or WEBP file into the Lightbox Maker Tool, and it’ll attempt to split the color blocks for you, separating each into a separate filament assignment. Photographs and color-rich images will, naturally, require many filaments. You could limit the number of colors to simplify the model, though the results will degrade. That’s why it’s best to stick to simply graphics and text.

From there you can configure holes in the backing for cables and, helpfully, keyholes for screws; ways to mount the light box to a wall.

As ever with these tools, it appears simple and getting started is as easy as dragging and dropping an image, but there’s a surprising amount of depth and customizability at your disposal.

You can use your own LED strips to illuminate your light box, or pick some up through Bambu Lab’s Maker’s Supply project components and accessories store.
