Anycubic is releasing a new digital light processing (DLP) based resin 3D printer. As with the Photon Ultra that preceded it, the core technology of the new Photon D2 is the result of a collaboration between Texas Instruments and Anycubic.

Anycubic raised seed funding for the initial Photon Ultra was raised with a Kickstarter campaign that resulted in an incredible $2,298,559.69 The Photon D2 promises even better specs superseding the original Photon Ultra with its high printing precision, longer screen life, and savings on consumption.

Despite a 2K resolution (2,560 x 1,440 pixels), Anycubic claims that the Photon D2 is comparable to similarly-sized LCD-based printer at 8K resolution (7,680 x 4,320 pixels). This claim tracks, as we explain in our DLP 3D printing technology guide. Anycubic also claims its gray anti-aliasing algorithm for the Photon D2 can achieve “printed objects with life-like precision”. In contrast to LCD-based resin 3D printers, Anycubic also claims the Photon D2 has a long screen time, approximately 20,000 hours.

The Photon D2’s build volume is 162% larger than the Photon Ultra at 130.56 x 73.44 x 165 mm. That means it can produce larger or larger batches of pieces and still save on energy.

We’ve gotten early access to the Photon D2 and have a hands-on feature in the making. Stay tuned for our first impressions of this exciting new tech soon.
