Want some pizzazz in your life? Combine 3D printing with a few bits and bobs to create the eye-catching levitating pyramid.
How cool is it to see 3D prints that include illusion effects? This design will be the conversation piece – or the perfect distraction on your desk while you’re waiting for that next online meeting to start. (Just be careful not to get distracted during the actual meeting.)
Why did we pick it as this Thing of the Week? Well, it’s a cool design, and for summer projects we’re aiming to up the game a bit in terms of creation and assembly. Plus, it can be a great example to teach concepts of magnets and levitation. The best part? It’s easy as buying Bambu Lab’s magnetic levitation kit, 3D printing the parts, and putting everything together.
Let’s take a closer look on how to create this glowing mirage.
As you might’ve seen from the article’s lead image or from the one right above this text, transparency is key. The designers recommend using materials with similar properties, which explains why they opted for two Bambu Lab PETGs: translucent for the inner wall and CF composite for the outer shell. They also suggest that a combination of transparent PLA and silk PLA could work – and should definitely look good.
Printing is easy as it gets, especially as the profiles shared include standard settings – 0.2-mm layer height, 2 walls, no infill – and the possibility of opting for any 3D printer as there are no print bed restrictions.
There are very clear instructions on how to assemble the whole creation, with useful images and plenty more gifs, plus a note that patience will be required. From the results alone, we’d say it’s all worth it. And if you look at the makes shared by other creators, you’re bound to find inspiration on the best combination of colors that’ll work best for you.
The designing team behind 花田小猫 (or flowercat) has shared 46 models so far, each stunning and unique in their own way. From a dancing butterfly to a rotating pen holder and planner, plus Christmas trees and Pikachu keychains, they have plenty to offer. And you can follow them on MakerWorld, join their commercial membership, and also support them via Patreon with one of the three memberships they offer.
