There are a few 3D printer brands out there that tend to fly under the radar, quietly releasing interesting machines to fairly positive responses from the community. Sovol 3D is one of those, and though its naming convention is rather bland, it’s managed another interesting release again with its latest printer, the Sovol SV04.

Though a mostly standard FDM machine, the SV04’s independent dual extruder (IDEX) feature piqued our interest. Despite a widespread desire for easy multi-material 3D printing in the community, IDEX (and even dual extrusion) hasn’t quite yet become a pervasive technology at the lower, budget end of the market – so any machine offering a second independent extruder in the price category is instantly attractive. Besides being IDEX, the SV04 – like its predecessors – offers direct extrusion and features on par with many current, great 3D printers.

Dual extrusion is probably a good market for Sovol and a good technology to have another low-cost option in. There’s not much competition in budget IDEX systems just yet. One or two offerings are in the same sub-$600 price bracket as the SV04, but your next options beyond these will quickly part you from three or four times as much. Understandably, most folks prioritize other things in that range.

But does the SV04 touch on those other considerations too? Read on to get an idea of everything the Sovol SV04 IDEX 3D printer offers.

Sovol SV04: Specs, Price, Release & Reviews

Features

Direct Extrusion

IDEX Direct Metal Titan-style Extruders

Sovol 3D has been using direct extrusion since its first iteration, and though the print head has been rearranged somewhat to accommodate a second extruder, the tech is about the same as its last version.

The SV04 uses two metal (not “all-metal”) Titan-style direct extruders. Though direct extrusion adds some weight to the x-axis, it also makes printing flexibles a little easier and retraction more accurate — so many makers think it’s worth the tradeoff.

Build Volume

With a build volume of 300 x 300 x 400 mm, the SV04 seems to be finding a sweet spot. The SV03 boasted a slightly larger 350 mm X- and Y-axis, while the SV02 and SV01 were both much smaller systems. These new dimensions seem in line with many popular large-volume 3D printers on the market today, so maybe Sovol found that to be all its community really needs.

Though the SV04’s build volume is a little smaller than Sovol’s last version, it is still plenty generous and should serve most purposes with ample excess. Good thing, too, since you can make good use of its independent dual extruders with the space.

Independent Dual Extruders

One previous iteration of Sovol’s printers was also capable of dual-extrusion – the SV02 — but did so with single-nozzle dual extrusion. The SV04 is taking things up a notch with independent dual extruders. IDEX beats out single-nozzle dual extruders in a few ways, such as being less prone to clogs, not requiring a purge tower, and enabling simultaneous printing for speedy batch production. Slinging two direct extruder-toting print heads can mean more vibrations during printing, though.

The SV04 has its direct extruders riding along what appears to be a 40 mm V-slot extrusion. Troublingly, considering the 400 mm build height, there doesn’t seem to be a brace or any additional support for the frame. We’ve seen some pretty severe shaking from frames of this height running just a single direct extruder. Here’s hoping Sovol has a stable build for the SV04. Still, 3D printing a brace is an easy upgrade.

Touch Probe Bed-Levelling Sensors

The Sovol 3D SV04 Includes a touch probe on Each Print Head

Something becoming increasingly common in the lower ends of the budget 3D printer space, the Sovol SV04 comes pre-equipped with auto bed leveling (ABL). Sovol offered the good ol’ BLTouch as an addon component for the SV01 and SV02 before it transitioned to stock in the previous SV03 as standard ABL started gaining popularity in its target price range. It looks like the SV04 uses a clone rather than an actual BLTouch this time.

ABL isn’t strictly necessary like many other upgrades that are becoming increasingly common, but it does have the potential to eliminate a lot of work by correcting for small misalignments if your bed isn’t perfectly tram (meaning you don’t need to level as often) or is somewhat warped.

32-bit Creality V5.2.1 Mainboard

Also catching up with the market, the SV04 is now on a 32-bit Creality mainboard. Since we’re hitting a point where 8-bit boards can struggle to keep up with commands, this is a must-have if you have any hope of those two print heads reliably executing commands in unison. Interestingly the SV04 carries a Creality board we haven’t seen before. This 5.2.1-designated slab has TMC2208 stepper motor drivers for silent movement of the various axes and, seemingly, more ports than the more common Creality boards; options to control all the extra appendages that come with an IDEX system it would appear.

Further Features

Dual Z Lead Screws

The X-axis gantry benefits from extra support to remain correctly under the added weight of the second extruder. It’s nothing new for Sovol, but the SV04’s dual Z lead screws should help to keep things stable.

Filament Detection & Print Recovery

As with previous versions, the SV04 comes with filament detection and print recovery, so you can be sure any large jobs or batch prints won’t be ruined by a nuisance problem like broken filament or brownouts.

Flexible Magnetic Build Plate

Previous Sovol 3D printers opted for a tempered glass print bed, but the SV04 has gone flexible with an easily removable magnetic sheet. This should make print removal a breeze, but these sheets can sometimes be hit or miss.

Purge Buckets

The SV04 comes with two purge buckets to collect oozing filament from idling print heads and to wipe nozzles before printing again. A handy addon that will save users installing a brush of their own.

Reviews

Sovol 3D’s SV04 has been available since June last year. Broadly speaking, it seems to have flown under the radar, but there are a couple of thorough reviews from good sources available for this IDEX system.

Overall, the SV04 has been well received as a good-quality and affordable IDEX system. It seems there were some early firmware issues that made it difficult to work with both extruders, but those have since been rectified. Double-check that your firmware is the latest version if you’re having issues.

Price

Image of Sovol SV04: Specs, Price, Release & Reviews: Price

The SV04 is retailing for $599 but is on sale for $539 at the time of writing. It’s not a bad price for an IDEX with a few easy bonuses tacked onto it. IDEX printers out there go for less, but if the discounted $539 price sticks, it’s quite a deal.

The next closest printer in cost is probably the Tenlog TL-D3 Pro, which goes for ~$530. It’s a very similar system that has feature parity for the most part, but with perhaps a little more thought into the weight of those two extruders.

Be aware, there are some supply issues right now (surprise, surprise). At the time of writing the SV04 is in stock in EU warehouses and available to order with a two-to-seven-day delivery window. EU stock will also ship to the UK, but only with an EU plug. Not a huge hurdle to overcome, but an inconvenience. You can currently request the printers to ship from the UK, but there’s a clear disclaimer that only the EU warehouse has stock and no estimate as to when proper UK deliveries will take place.

Unfortunately, there seems to be no North American stock right now. US orders are only expected to ship February 20th, while Canada and Australia are expected to ship in “mid-February”.

Similar Printers

If IDEX is what you’re after (or even just single-nozzle dual extrusion), head on over to our list, The Best Dual Extruder 3D Printers in 2024. But if the Sovol 3D SV04 is already looking pretty good, we’ll list a few similar options below for you to consider first:

Tenlog TL-D3 Pro

The Tenlog TL-D3 Pro has been one of the most affordable IDEX options on the market for a while now. We’ve praised its large build volume before, which is similar to the SV04 but beaten by Sovol 3D’s system by just 50 mm extra Z height. Where the Tenlog does have the SV04 beat is in its X-axis gantry’s rigidity. The TL-D3’s X-axis uses a sturdy linear rail that should go a long way in supporting its second extruder over the SV04’s more standard aluminum V-slot rail.

The price of these systems is comparable, with the Tenlog TL-D3 coming in just a touch more affordable at ~$530 on Tenlog’s website, so you can take your pick if either is within your budget.

Geetech A10M

If you’re looking to get some multi-color prints out on a budget, IDEX might be overkill. You can step things down a little further in price by opting for a single-nozzle dual extrusion 3D printer. One appealing option for this is the Geetech A10M. At 220 x 220 x 260 mm, the A10M’s build volume is significantly smaller than that of the SV04, but for that, you can take a big chunk of the price out and land at just $250 for multi-material 3D printing. You will need to use a purge tower for this sort of setup, though, wasting valuable filament.

If you want to print with even more materials, take a look at the Geetech A20T — a single-nozzle triple material system.

Creality Ender 3 Max

Are you spending more for an IDEX 3D printer just to get a bit of futureproofing? Just in case you need dual extrusion down the road? What if we told you that the Ender 3, one of the most affordable 3D printers on the market with one of the largest communities surrounding it, can be upgraded to dual extrusion systems?

It shouldn’t be that much of a surprise, really. If the 3D printing technology exists, someone has probably put it on an Ender 3. We even have a list of Ender 3 dual extrusion upgrades you can implement yourself (but there are more options floating around like Ender IDEX). So, if you want to save yourself a bit of cash, pick up an Ender 3 Max. It has about the same build volume as the SV04 (minus 60 mm on the Z) and can be had for just ~$350.
