This 3D printer from the Chinese company Anycubic was announced in February 2018 and came to market early April the same year. It is clearly inspired by the Zortrax M200, which is an excellent printer at a much higher price.

Anycubic 4Max: Review the Specs

What's Special About It

Image of Anycubic 4Max: Review the Specs: What's Special About It

This desktop 3D printer comes as a DIY kit that is relatively easy to assemble. It’s not as easy to build as the Anycubic i3 Mega (review here), as there are several more components to assemble (see image above).

There‘s an English documentation available, all the plugs and parts are clearly labeled. As usual, Anycubic even throws in some spares.

You should be able to assemble the Anycubic 4Max (Formax) in under 5 hours.

These are the most prominent features of the Anycubic 4Max (Formax):

  1. Closed build chamber: This is where the Anycubic 4Max (Formax) really stands out from its low-cost competition. A closed build chamber makes it easier to print with notoriously difficult materials like ABS or nylon. These filaments need not only a heated bed (which the Anycubic 4Max has), but also a good temperature management within the printer itself. With an enclosed build room, the upper layers of larger prints will turn out much better.
  2. Filament outage sensor: It’s one of the 3D printing problems you probably already ran into: You started a large print overnight… and then the filament runs out on the last layers. Filament outage can be so annoying! Thanks to a dedicated mechanical sensor in the Anycubic 4Max, the printer senses if spool runs out and stops automatically. Later, you can load a new spool and resume printing.
  3. Power outage: If you are living in an area where power can run out without warning, you’ll love this feature. As soon as you pull the plug or the power cuts out, the Anycubic remembers the last position it printed – and will resume from that point as soon as the power is back up again.
  4. Anycubic Ultrabase: This build plate is the same as in the Anycubic i3 Mega – and we really came to like it. First, this coated glass plate can heat up to 110 degrees Celsius. Second, with a little initial help of gluestick, we never had problems of having the prints stick to the bed. Lastly, it’s still easy enough to remove the print from the bed without having to use brute force. So, in this, the Anycubic 4Max (Formax) really shines.

Models can be loaded via an SD card. Alternatively, you can hook up the Anycubic 4Max to a computer and print directly from there.

When it comes to 3D slicing, the manufacturer offers a dedicated version of Cura on its SD card.

The printer itself is capable of producing prints as big as 210 x 210 x 300 mm. That‘s quite spacious for a $500 3D printer, but if you are looking for more build space, take a look at these large-format 3D printers.
