Wide Open Arts are creating an installation of 3D printed towers in New York City, with an open invite for creative professionals to submit their designs.
An organization called Wide Open Arts plan to build a city of 3D printed towers, and they’re inviting all architects, engineers, 3D designers and model makers to submit their designs.
The towers could be imaginary, historical or everyday designs, and will be curated for the Outsider Art Fair which will take place in New York City between January 21-24, 2016
“We are in search of contemporary, modern and ancient towers; industrial or religious; fantastical or utilitarian; brutalist or gothic…from air traffic control towers to bell towers to tower blocks and sky scrapers,” Wide Open Arts said in their call for submissions.
The 3D printable buildings will be judged by the independent artist and curator, Leah Gordon. The first prize will be accompanied by a $1000 honorarium.
“Imaginary cities and surreal structures have long been the domain of many outsider artists. This exhibition aims to create a collective multi-authorial installation that descends from the Fluxus mail art movement.”
Wide Open Arts collaborating with Voodoo Manufacturing
If you’d like to enter, the online application process is now open and closes at mid-night GMT on Tuesday, December 15th, 2015. Applicants will then be informed whether their work has been accepted by Friday, January 1st, 2016.
Due to material restrictions, the rules state that the towers must be structurally sound, and not contain too many overhangs or thin areas — very much like a real building, in fact!
The best designs will be passed on and the printing itself will be handled by Voodoo Manufacturing, a 3D printing studio that opened recently in the Williamsburg area.
In order to help cover printing costs, the towers will also be for sale at the Outsider Art Fair which will take place on January 21st – 24th, 2016 at the Metropolitan Pavilion, 125 W 18th St, New York, NY 10011.
