Smallest 3D printer in the Ultimaker range is easier to transport with the Ultimaker 2 Go Backpack, a sturdy foam box with shoulder straps.

With hindsight, it seems totally obvious. The one thing missing from the Ultimaker 2 Go was a backpack, to take full advantage of its (comparatively) light weight and make the machine fully portable.

Better late than never, Ultimaker is now shipping the smallest 3D printer in their range with a free Ultimaker 2 Go Backpack, so you can lug it around to any place you choose.

It’s essentially a study foam box with straps, which is as lightweight as possible while offering valuable protection for a machine costing a not-inconsiderable sum of $1,200 dollars.

Ultimaker says it created the backpack to give its users a safe way to move it from one site to another, for example those using it for educational purposes and workshops.

As a proof of concept, check out this video of a pair of chaps from 3DPrinterOS, as they dash from place to place in New York City teaching 3D printing classes. They’re gonna get real buff real quick, we reckon!

Whoever is responsible for dreaming up the backpack at Ultimaker HQ in the Netherlands, we applaud you. This is a simple, inexpensive addition that suddenly makes the Ultimaker 2 Go that much more attractive.

Whereas before you might have looked at the 3D printer and thought ”meh” — it’s missing a heated bed and the build space is too small for the price — suddenly you’re thinking “WOW!”

You catch yourself dreaming of taking it to the next family BBQ (together with a 1,000km extension cord for the power) and printing off some tongs to hold your hot buttered corn-on-the-cob.
