Epson collaborates with DJI to bring a virtual drone to your home. All you need are a pair of Moverio BT-300 AR glasses and a DJI drone control pad.

If you’re one of the small subset of people to own both Epson Moverio BT-300 AR glasses and a one of DJI‘s newer drones, you’re in luck! The two manufacturers have partnered to launch an app for the Moverio that lets you fly a virtual drone using the real drone’s controller pad.

In principle it sounds like a positive quality of life improvement for the drone folks. Claiming realistic movement and reactions, this digi-drone is positioned as some kind of training tool.

A pair of games that put advance pilots’ skills to the test will be included with the app. And all with the added benefit of not endangering the expensive physical counterparts.

Smart Glasses, Virtual Drones

Epson’s BT-300 AR smart glasses are already ingrained in the drone ecosystem. The display tech allows users to monitor the feed from their drone without losing situational awareness.

Up to now, this analytical in-flight use has been one of few applications available for the BT-300. Following the release of the AR flight simulator, the companies plan to follow up with other drone-related offerings that enhance the safety and capabilities of drones connected to the Epson platform.

Unfortunately the only way to experience Epson and DJI’s virtual drone right now is at select dedicated drone retailers. If you want to try it at home, you’ll have to wait for the app to launch in the Epson App Marketplace later this year.

When it does launch, it will support flight controllers from DJI’s Mavic Pro, Phantom 4, Inspire 2 and Spark drones.
