This week at TCT Show, Ultimaker is launching a new third-party material solution that consists of industrial material profiles and the new CC Red 0.6 print core.
Earlier this year, right around the time that the Dutch 3D printer manufacturer and open-source pioneer Ultimaker unveiled the professional-grade Ultimaker S5 3D printer, they also announced a global material alliance that brought together some of the world’s largest material producers. The overall aim of this consortium is to develop industrial materials and optimized material profiles for FDM 3D printing.
This week at TCT Show in Birmingham, UK, Ultimaker is on the scene showcasing the early success of the global material alliance. The company has announced new material profiles for industrial materials, as well as the new CC Red 0.6 print core, which will enable its users to print with composite materials on the Ultimaker S5 (review here).
The two alliance members that have most recently worked with Ultimaker includes DSM, a global science-based company focusing on nutrition, health and sustainable living, and Owens Corning, a developer and producer of insulation, roofing, and fiberglass composites. Together, the collaboration has led to the development of materials that are optimized for use with the Ultimaker S5 3D printer.

The other new material is Owens Corning XSTRAND filament, a glass-fiber reinforced material with strong mechanical and thermal properties. Designed for functional prototypers and other industrial applications, this filament provides exceptional durability, stiff mechanical properties, a low thermal expansion coefficient, and a high working temperature. With XSTRAND, the material producer believes that it will be easier to prototype and produce tools with its new high-end filament.
Finally, in order to ensure that these composite materials can be printed without any hiccups, Ultimaker is rolling out its new CC Red 0.6 print core. Engineered to 3D print composite materials on the S5, the print core features a 0.6 mm diameter nozzle with a specially customized geometry and a wear-resistant ruby cone.
Ultimaker’s latest print core will be made available in November 2018, while the new materials will be added to Ultimaker Cura around the same time frame.
