Have you downloaded and tried out the latest Ultimaker Cura beta release yet? If so, a few of your ideas or feedback may have been integrated into the newest update of the maker community’s favorite 3D printing slicer.
Cura is one of the most popular 3D slicers due to the fact that it’s both free and open-source. With the help of its vast community, the platform is regularly improved upon and easy-to-use no matter whether you’re a beginner or paid professional.
In December 2018, the company launched a preview of the 4.0 version of the software in order to receive community feedback. Now, the final version of Cura 4.0 is here and there are a few notable features worth mentioning.

Ultimaker Cura 4.0 Release Notes
Ultimaker promises reliable, professional 3D printing results with its software thanks to expert-configured and road-test profiles which make both hardware and material configuration simple and fast.
If you download this free software, you can also expect out-of-the-box support for STL, OBJ, X3D, and 3MF file formats. Add Cura Connect and you can use one interface to manage one or more network-enabled Ultimaker printers.
A few of the release notes from this update include:
- An updated user interface: Ultimaker promises a more intuitive UI which takes into account the workflow of its users. Marketplace and user account control have been integrated into the main interface making plugins and material profiles easily accessible.
- Redesigned “Add Printer” dialog: Ultimaker updated one of the very first and most important dialog boxes that a new user is presented with. The company adds that the new “Add Printer” layout is loosely modeled on the layout of the Ultimaker 3/Ultimaker S5 “Connect to Network” dialog, and adds some instructions and intention to the dialog.
- Updated custom mode panel: The custom mode panel is now resizable in order to improve access to more settings.
- Integrated backups: Integration of “Cura backups” can be found in the ‘extensions’ menu so you can use your Ultimaker account to backup Ultimaker Cura configurations to the cloud.
Other noteworthy updates include an updated monitor tab interface, remote printing via the Ultimaker S5, user ratings for plugins, and minimum support areas. The manufacturer has also addressed a variety of bugs and has also added support for more third-party 3D printers, particularly for printers made by Wanhao and JGAurora, as well as an updated profile for the Creality Ender 3.
