Not just for mannequins, the newest two-meter-tall 3D printer from Modix can make quick work of any life-size model with its new 500-gram/hour printhead.

Called the Modix BIG-2Meter “Everest” and featuring a 970 x 1,030 x 2,000 mm print volume, it is the company’s biggest printer to date. Most of the tech specs of the Everest are based on the company’s other popular large-format printer, the Big Meter, including its reinforced gantry frame, electronics, and heater components. There’s also a full set of automated calibrations, including automated bed tilt, bed leveling, gantry alignment, and Z offset calibration.

Unlike other Modix models, the enclosure is included (not optional) and is essential to maintaining the consistent temperature required to avoid warping on such large prints.

The bed is attached to the HIWIN rails (a type of linear motion guide system) installed on the Z profiles, stabilizing the entire frame while it moves down during the print time.

Modix says: “We have modified the top lid to hold the filament spools inside the printer so it will not fall on anybody,” which was apparently a problem. The Everest can accommodate 8kg filament spools, yet perhaps missing an opportunity to offer more economical pellet material like some other large-scale 3D printers.

The new Griffin Ultra extruder from Modix (Source: Modix)

Modix says its new Griffin Ultra extruder ($1,000) significantly shortens printing times through its capacity for printing thicker layers faster than the previous iteration of the Griffin. The Ultra can completing tasks that previously took 12 hours in just two, the company says.

Griffin Ultra is equipped with a 1.6 mm nozzle and supports layer heights of 0.3 mm to 1.2 mm at speeds up to 250 mm/sec. Ultra is compatible with all Modix Gen3 and Gen4 Big series printers, including independent dual extruder (IDEX) configurations. Printing temperatures can reach as high as 500°C, enabling high-performance filaments, such as carbon-fiber infused materials. IDEX is an optional add-on.

All Modix machines are modular and come as self-assembly kits. This makes it easy to add features not included, such as air filters or things that Modix will come out with in the future. You can order one now, but shipping isn’t expected to start until July 2024.
