Prusa Research has announced that its highly anticipated CoreXY 3D printer, the Original Prusa XL, is finally shipping.

After repeated delays set back the machine’s intended shipping date of Q2/Q3 2022, day-one preorders of the pre-assembled single-toolhead XLs are finally ready to leave the factory, Prusa Research founder and CEO Josef Průša said in an article on the company’s blog yesterday.

The article notes that first batches are relatively small, fulfilling “only the orders from the first few minutes of the pre-sale” due to the overwhelming interest the 3D printer received. Though manufacturing will ramp up, Prusa says it “will need several months to ship the thousands of day-one orders.”

By way of apology for all the delays, Prusa Research is shipping all day-one preorders with two extras: a textured print surface (in addition to the default satin surface) and a Nextruder V6 nozzle adapter.

That second gift is especially important. The Prusa XL’s incredibly advanced Nextruder comes with a proprietary “volcano-size” nozzle (an E3D collaboration) that includes a metal filament guide and heat break. But, rather than lock users into its own consumable parts, Prusa has released a V6-nozzle adaptor to open up more options. It’s not yet clear what the monetary value of this part is.

Though single-toolhead XLs will finally find their way to expectant owners, multi-toolhead units have a few more hurdles to overcome. A major selling feature of the 3D printer, Prusa says it needs another two months for external beta testing and updates before multi-toolhead systems are ready to ship.

Prusa’s blog article also details a host of small changes to the XL since the company’s last update, mostly quality-of-life tweaks. For the full rundown, give it a read.
