With discount offers and a newly designed retention program, designers should be able to better drive sales, expand their reach, and “minimize lost revenue.”

The 3D printing repository Thangs announced two designer-friendly updates to its platform over the weekend.

The first allows designers to offer one-time discounts on individual models to their members. These discounts would be available to all members, regardless of the model allowances set by their membership plans. The example Thangs gives is a designer allowing subscribers to purchase two additional models at 50% off, next to their regular downloads.

Designers who enable the option can set a discount percentage of between 5-50% on their “Thangs Plans” page. They can then announce the discounts on social media to drive sales and attract new subscribers, Thangs says.

The second update is the newly introduced Thangs Retention Program, which offers subscribers free, short-term access to a second subscription should they attempt to cancel an existing one.

When canceling, subscribers will now be given the choice to immediately cancel their subscription or commit to two more months, during which time they’ll also have become a member of another designer’s plan, so long as that designer has opted into the program. In such cases, both designers evenly split the monthly payments from the retention program.

The choice of designers presented to subscribers will be those with similar price points and plan types. Once the two months are up, the subscription reverts to its original state. Like the one-time discount option, the Thangs Retention Program aims to simultaneously expand designers’ reach and boost revenue (or “minimize revenue loss”).

Both the membership discounts feature and retention program have dedicated blog posts, which you should read if you want to get into the nitty-gritty.
