With new AI-powered masking and a upgraded scan analysis tool, Epic's rebranded software makes it easier than ever to turn photos from your phone or drone into high-fidelity 3D models.
RealityCapture has long been a favorite software of game designers and virtual reality creators who need to accurately capture photo data of objects or environments and translate it into 3D images and scenes. Now, with the release of the latest version, which is free for most users, there’s a trove of new features. The biggest changes is probably name. Epic is ditching “RealityCapture” and calling its powerful desktop software RealityScan.
Don’t get confused with the 3D scanning app for mobile devices from Epic that’s already called RealityScan, it’s getting a new name, too: RealityScan Mobile. It’s available now in your Android or Apple app store for smartphone or tablet.
“With improved alignment, AI masking, and aerial LiDAR support, RealityScan 2.0 is ready for you to scan the world,” Epic says.

The new version adds AI-powered masking, alignment improvements; visual quality inspection, and support for airborne laser scans.
Save a lot of time and labor with the new masking tool that uses AI to automatically remove backgrounds. There’s an improved alignments setting for better models with fewer manual interventions, Epic says. Plus, for larger surveying projects or virtual reality, you can combing aerial imagery, aerial LiDar, and land-based scanning data to generate precise orthographic projection maps and 3D models.
Brand new in RealityScan is the Quality Analysis tool that which shows you where you scan may be incomplete so you know where you need more data before moving forward with processing your scan data. Quality values are displayed as a color overlay on the sparse point cloud or mesh—green indicates good quality, while red highlights problem areas.
In addition to the new features, a long menu of bugs have been fixed or addressed (see release notes for a list).
There doesn’t seem to be any updates to the RealityScan Mobile, which is a free-to-download mobile app.
