Prusa Research Announces rPLA and High-Temp PEI Prusament

Made from algae, grapes, corn, and food waste, the rPLA is 100% recycled material. And, a PEI material announced alongside Prusa’s new "Pro" brand.

Prusa has announced the release of new rPLA filaments, plus a new PEI filament.

There are four rPLA filaments: Prusament rPLA Algae Pigment, Prusament rPLA Wine Pigment, Prusament rPLA Corn Pigment, and  Prusament rPLA Rissoto Pigment. Each is dyed with “biobased pigments” from the food and pharmaceutical industries, respectively red algae (brown filament), grapes (Bordeaux-colored), corn (beige-colored), and “various food leftovers” (cream-colored).

Rather than use its own waste to make these filaments, as it does for others in its rPLA line, Prusa is making its own pellets using manufacturing waste from PLA foil, which is purchased externally.

This makes the new rPLA entries 100% recycled material and allows Prusa to avoid challenges in achieving the correct coloring for each. One-kilogram spools of the four new colors are available now on Prusa’s website at $30.99, with an accompanying blog post offering more information.

Prusa has also announced a new PEI filament, Prusament PEI, which arrives alongside its new Pro line of printers. It isn’t available for sale yet, but was featured at Prusa’s Formnext booth, where the company showcased several of its new industrial-focused machines. There isn’t much information available on Prusament PEI, although Prusa’s blog post on the Pro brand sheds a bit of light on the forthcoming material – as well as more on the machines with which it will work.
