JBV creative is an artist and engineer who designs quirky mechanical models. Now, he’s making a lifesize 3D-printed wall clock and providing the STLs files through a Kickstarter campaign.

Working out of his studio in Toronto JBV has created some innovative designs that straddle the divide between art and robotics. There’s the huge wall of rotating daisies, the mechanical menorah with a robotic arm that light’s the candles and so many more inspiring designs.

Navigating over to JBV’s website you find some free STLS files including a wind-up kinetic snowflake sculpture and a gear switch. More complex designs are available for a price. These ‘premium’ STLs files include a mechanical Christmas beer bottle opener.

JBV’s latest premium project is a 3D-printed kinetic wall clock which is being promoted via Kickstarter. The print is inspired by an ancient grandfather clock, with its heavy pendulum that swings back and forth, dictating the passing of time with the ceaseless to and fro of each second.

JBV is still in the process of creating the final design of the clock, but once the campaign is over, backers will have first access to STLs for five different escapement mechanisms that stand alone as artistic wall installations.

An escapement mechanism is, essentially, the mechanical end of the clock that turns the minute, second, and hour dials. JBV has created five unique designs including a flying pendulum that wraps around the post.

JBV has promised that for every additional $4000 the campaign makes he will add more escapement mechanism designs to a bundle for backers. Each package will include a step-by-step assembly video, the STLs files, and a list of materials.

This looks like an accessible project for anyone eager to test their mechanical print-making skills, especially as the files can fit on “small” 180 x 180 mm build area printers. Get stuck in!
