A new full-version release of MainsailOS is here, bringing Raspberry Pi 5 compatibility among other useful transitions.
MainsailOS, a popular pre-built single-board computer image that packages Klipper, the Mainsail GUI, and Moonraker, has released version 2.0.0.
The new version sees the addition of Raspberry Pi 5 compatibility and a transition in the build workflow to CustoPiZer (a customization tool based on the CustomPiOS tool MainsailOS previously used), which the Mainsail team says brings a “more efficient, transparent, and robust workflow”.
Though Raspberry Pi 5 compatibility is an exciting change for this release, the MainsailOS team shared a word of caution:
“We, the crew, still recommend the Pi 5 only with reservations for use with Klipper and webcams, as the important hardware encoder for webcam video processing is missing. This can impact performance.”
Still, there are more backend improvements to appreciate in this release, such as a complete rewrite of the system’s watchdog, Sonar, and a foundation on an up-to-date Debian Bookworm.
The Klipper image has been in version 1. for several years now, adding many single-board computers, like Orange Pi devices, as options in that time. For more details, check out the full MainsailOS v2.0.0 release notes on GitHub.
