Input Shaping is Coming to the Prusa XL

After last month’s input shaping update for the Original Prusa MK4, Prusa Research has released an alpha version of the feature for the Prusa XL. This will enable both faster print times and boosted efficiency during color changes, Prusa writes in a recent blog post.

Implementing the feature “was a bit of a challenge”, as the XL is a “vastly more complex machine” – and one that has different kinematics – than the MK4. It’s also faster and often used for larger prints, meaning its input shaping has to “perform more calculations”. Like the MK4, these calculations are done on the XL’s CPU. This, Prusa says, is a matter of security, with the company wary of putting a secondary computer running Linux (Klipper) into its machines.

Regardless, the input shaper alpha for the Prusa XL has arrived, with a GitHub page that dives into the details and offers full release notes. Once fully implemented, Prusa promises the XL will be “the fastest and most efficient multi-material solution out there”.

The blog also contains a shipping update for existing orders of the Prusa XL. The company claims to have successfully navigated its earlier supply chain difficulties and has hired an additional 100 staff to increase its production capacity.

Prusa says it now expects to ship all preorders made in 2021 by the end of this year. Those who preordered their machine in 2022 can expect their XL to ship by the end of April, with 2023 preorders shipping by the end of June. That’s still quite a wait, but it is nice to hear things are ramping up.
