Makertech 3D has launched a Kickstarter campaign for a high-speed, toolchanging 3D printer.
The open-source, DIY Proforge 4 is slated to feature a large build volume of 400 x 300 x 340 mm and an optional toolchanger capable of switching between four print heads. Makertech claims the printer’s Quad Core XY motion system design – which uses four, rather than the typical two, motors – will enable it to reach speeds of 800 mm/s and acceleration of 60,000 mm/s².
Four independent Z motors, meanwhile, will work to enable “true, four-point mechanical bed leveling” resulting in a “perfect first layer.” Additionally, Makertech says, the printer’s hot end can be changed with one hand and reach temperatures of up to 350 °C.
Further slated features include a built-in webcam, a toolhead calibration camera, a heated bed, a fully enclosed chamber with a carbon filter, and a five-inch touchscreen. Except for the built-in webcam, all of these are planned to be add-ons to the Proforge 4’s basic kit, which will essentially consist of the bed, frame, and a single print head.
On paper, the Proforge 4 seems fair competition for the now-released Original Prusa XL, which boasts a comparable build volume and an optional five-head toolchanger. As such, Makertech’s new machine is an interesting addition to a relatively quiet space – one in which other manufacturers may have been given time to compete after the Prusa XL was delayed from its original Q3 2022 release.
The standard Kickstarter word of caution applies here, of course. At the time of this writing, however, the Proforge 4 has raised over $174,000 of its ~$37,500 goal, with packages starting at $1,382 and planned to ship in August.
