The team behind the open-source X1 Plus custom firmware for Bambu Lab X-series 3D printers has launched its first stable release. The move follows Bambu Lab’s January announcement that it would allow users to root X1 3D printers with an opt-in firmware branch.

Our coverage of that announcement spotlighted X1Plus’s offerings as the project that forced Bambu Lab’s hand with regard to custom firmware and the company’s general acceptance of it.

In addition to deeper insight and control over a machine, custom firmware can offer features not provided by the OEM. X1Plus includes “detailed diagnostics during calibration routines such as bed leveling and vibration compensation, terminal and SSH access, an optional lock screen, and an additional layer of data security via the ‘LAN + shield’ mode'”, with more features planned amid an open call for contributors to help realize them.

While the team behind X1Plus is not affiliated with Bambu Lab, the OEM has communicated closely with them to accommodate the launch. However, users who choose to install any custom firmware – including X1Plus – on their machines will no longer be eligible for warranty benefits.

Bambu Lab says it will still make “a best-effort attempt” to support printers that experience hardware failures caused by manufacturing defects, but it does not guarantee this.

To use custom firmware, users must first sign a waiver of warranty and safety responsibility and then install Official Rootable Firmware – which Bambu Lab calls “Firmware R” – which enables the use of third-party firmware.

Bambu Lab also tentatively welcomes others who are looking to collaborate with its ecosystem, laying out several ground rules that revolve around safety, intellectual property protection, and open communication.

Opting in while logged in to your Bambu Lab account will push Firmware R as an installable option to your account, and you can then push the update to your compatible printer via the Bambu Handy app.
