Bambu Lab's Parametric Model Maker, available via MakerWorld, now enables creators to upload and edit Fusion (.f3d) parametric model files.

For many designers, parametric design is a must – but the process can be complex. Bambu Lab’s Parametric Model Maker has added an integration with configurable Fusion design files into the platform; it’s a direct connection between CAD software and 3D printers.

As Alexander Oster, director of AM at Autodesk shared on LinkedIn, with this integration, users “can directly modify and manufacture with their Bambu Lab’s printers at home.”

Like other tools in MakerWorld that aim to make it easier for designers to create, the Parametric Model Maker can be found under the MakerLab tab, along with other options, such as PrintMon Maker and Make My Lithophane.

The process is not as simple as logging into MakerWorld, opening the tool, and uploading a model, though. As detailed in the announcement, a variety of steps need to be taken. In Fusion itself, parameters need to be marked as Favorites so that they can be made customizable, and comments should be added. Then, the file can be uploaded to MakerWorld, not via the Parametric Model Maker, but as you would any design that you want to share. Next, the Customizer can be configured to ensure that the parameters are listed and to change the way they can be modified with sliders. Error messages appear should any of those requirements not be met.

Although the Parametric Model Maker may not offer as many features as Fusion – and understandably so – it’s an option worth considering for makers who want to customize native Fusion F3D files or who want to avoid the conversion to STL.

It should be noted that, while currently free, in their announcement, Bambu Lab pointed out that “to keep this tool sustainable, we may have it consume MakerLab credits in the distant future.” Time will tell how the Parametric Model Maker keeps evolving.
