The design firm cw&t has raised more than $10,000 on Kickstarter to design, print, and ship 100 3D printed tabletop lamps.

As 3D printing technology solidifies itself as a remarkable consumer production tool, crowdfunding platforms have turned into a safe haven for new projects. In fact, 3D printing innovation is so rampant that All3DP has been featuring a weekly roundup of relevant crowdfunding campaigns.

We recently caught word of a crowdfunding success story from cw&t, a Brooklyn design firm started by the couple Che-Wei Wang and Taylor Levy. The design duo launched a Kickstarter project back in January to raise $85 to produce their custom-made Dropped Pendant Lights.

But the crowdfunding campaign brought in way more money than anyone expected. cw&t reportedly raised over $10,000 for their project, over 12,000% more than their original Kickstarter goal. Each 3D printed tabletop lamp is uniquely designed and limited to 100.

In their spur-of-the-moment campaign video, the couple and their adorable toddler showoff the production process and home design studio.

Bringing Their Idea to Light

These custom-made 3D printed lamps are designed, printed, and also assembled in their home studio. They are being shipped fully assembled with an LED bulb, as well as a lasercut ID tag and serial number. The Dropped Pendant provides a gentle light that makes it ideal for the bedside table, desk, tabletop, or floor.

Each lamp is being designed with special equations on Autodesk Fusion 360 product development software, providing the duo with optimal variation and flexibility. cw&t will produce the lamps with Warm White PLA PRO filament on an Ultimaker 2 3D printer. It takes between 10 to 20 hours to print one lamp.

The design duo is limiting the number of lamps they produce, but backers can also 3D print their own lampshade. cw&t will grant supporters with access to a selection of STL files that can be printed at home. Along with the 3D files, the DIY Dropped Pendant Light Kit will also provide an assembled socket, wire, and plug. You must purchase the recommended 60WE 2200K LED bulb (110V) separately.

Those who have pledged $85 or more to the campaign will receive a fully assembled limited edition Dropped Pendant Light. Though the campaign just ended a couple of days ago, they estimate that delivery will begin sometime this month.

With their simplistic and innovative design work (plus a cute kid to boot), cw&t’s crowdfunding effort proves the world’s growing interest in custom 3D printed products. Follow the couple’s project via Instagram, and have their toddler and 3D printed Dropped Pendant Lights brighten up your day!
