FBX is an advanced, binary-based 3D file format that was developed more than 15 years ago. Widely used within 3D animation editors and game engines, FBX is a complex file format and the models themselves are often very detailed, hence why it takes lots of time and skill to bring them to life.
Considering the effort that goes into making FBX files, it’s no wonder that many quality FBX files aren’t available for free. However, we still managed to find a few sources with some good and, most importantly, free FBXs available to download.
In selecting our favorite free FBX file sources, we were guided by the following considerations:
Let’s dive in!
TurboSquid is a popular site for downloading all sorts of 3D models. It’s very easy to navigate, as you can search via categories and enter other search criteria such as price and model-specific features.
There are more than 7,500 free FBX models available on the site. To search for them, simply select “FBX Models” from the file format options on the landing page, then select “Free” under the price selection menu. If you’d like to filter your search even further, you can select model attributes like “Rigged” and “Animated” in the selection menu as well.
Thanks to its wide selection of models, as well as an easy-to-use user interface, we’d say TurboSquid is one of the best sites to look for free FBX models.
In case you’re willing to spend some money on a 3D model, feel free to check out paid FBX models on TurboSquid. Naturally, quality rises with price, so you can expect to see an even greater selection.
3DExport is an online marketplace for 3D models that’s quite similar to TurboSquid. What’s cool about 3DExport is that there are more than 20 categories for 3D models. Each of the categories offers subcategories, and that makes it super easy to find exactly what you’re after.
For example, if you’re searching for a free FBX model of a helicopter, click on “3D Models” and select the “AirCraft” category. Choose “Helicopter” from the list of options, then select “FBX” from the “Formats” dropdown menu and check the “Free products only” box.
Remember that you’ll need to create an account on 3DExport before being able to proceed to download.
When compared to TurboSquid, 3DExport offers fewer free FBX models, but that’s not a bad thing since there are still some good choices that aren’t listed on other competitor sites.
CGTrader is a 3D model marketplace where both designers and hobbyists can either sell or download all sorts of 3D models. With over 1,000,000 available models across 30+ file formats, CGTrader is one of the largest online 3D model repositories.
When it comes to free FBX models, there are more than 40,000 to choose from. Searching for models is done easily via categories and sub-filters, or simply searching by word. File formats can be selected from the “Formats” dropdown menu.
Before downloading a certain 3D model, you must create a CGTrader account. It might be an extra step not everybody wants, but considering the number of models available, it’s worth it.
Free3D is another rather well known online source for 3D models. What we love about it is its simplicity. Even from the home page, there are several icons representing different file formats. A simple click on one of them leads you straight to the full model selection for that specific file type. Luckily, FBX is one of the options.
According to the site, there are more than 3,300 free FBX models available. Each model has its own specification table with information on polygon count, textures, UV mapping, animation, among other things. You can download models without an account.
The quality of the models is fine, but perhaps not what you’d necessarily consider professional.
Renderpeople is, as their website claims, the world’s largest library of scanned 3D people. Since the site offers professional models, they all come at a certain price.
Models are divided into three product types: posed, rigged, and animated. Alternatively, you can search by topics, including business, shopping, swimwear, among others.
Naturally, these models come in various file formats, one of which is FBX. The good news is that there are some free models available, probably so new users can see what they can expect from the site. There are three free models for each of the product types.
If you’re after a quality FBX model of people, this might be your very best choice unless you’re willing to spend some cash.
Clara.io is an online platform for 3D modeling and rendering, as well as a 3D model library. The cool thing about Clara is that it’s all free and available through your internet browser. There are more than 100,000 free models, and they come in many different formats, one of which is FBX.
Models are split into six categories, with no filtering options. Whereas we’d usually like to see more search and filtering options, the search limitation is made up for by the fact that all of the models are free and come in 11 specific file formats.
Dimensiva offers high-quality 3D models of designer furniture and products. It’s quite niche, and that’s awesome if you’re working on some sort of interior design project. Although most models require payment, there are some free models, and you won’t have to compromise on quality.
Searching is limited to several categories, including free models. Information about the file and dimensions are given for each model, and it seems that all of them have FBX as an option. In order to download the models, you’ll first need to create an account.
GrabCAD is an online 3D model library with a community of over a million engineers. It’s backed by Statasys, which owns MakerBot, the company behind the very popular Thingiverse.
Overall, GrabCAD is somewhat of a more professional version of Thingiverse, one perhaps more oriented towards engineering. When it comes to free FBX models, there are a little over 300 free FBX models ready to be downloaded. Many of them are furniture models, but you can also find vehicles, people, and products.
The user interface of the site is fine, but we’d like to see is more freedom when it comes to search filtering. In order to get to the FBX models, it seems that you’ll have to type FBX into the search bar.
